Cows Skin Market Size in Indonesia

After two years of decline, the Indonesian cows skin market increased by 19% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cows skin exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 493% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

India (X kg) was the main destination for cows skin exports from Indonesia, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, cows skin exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X kg), more than tenfold. Japan (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.9% share.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Japan, with a CAGR of +600.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average cows skin export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas purchases of raw hides and skins of bovine animals decreased by -6.2% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 88%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, cows skin imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 97%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cows skin to Indonesia, accounting for a 19% share of total imports. Moreover, cows skin imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (X tons), threefold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy amounted to +28.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+16.8% per year) and Turkey (+29.9% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of raw hides and skins of bovine animals to Indonesia, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy totaled +33.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+33.7% per year) and Australia (+25.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average cows skin import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 4.7%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
