After nine years of growth, the Indonesian ball pen refill market decreased by -4.9% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Hong Kong SAR (X units), the United States (X units) and Hungary (X units) were the main destinations of ball pen refill exports from Indonesia, together accounting for 57% of total exports. These countries were followed by Singapore, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, the Netherlands, China and Germany, which together accounted for a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +65.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

After five years of growth, overseas purchases of refills for ball-point pens decreased by -29.1% to X units in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 131%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, ball pen refill imports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of ball pen refill to Indonesia, with a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, ball pen refill imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X units), sixfold. Singapore (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.9% share.

In 2021, the average ball pen refill import price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a deep contraction.
