Rice Market Size in Indonesia

From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Angola (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of rice exports from Indonesia, with a combined 68% share of total exports. Oman, Congo, Gambia, Saudi Arabia and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Congo (with a CAGR of +185.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for rice exported from Indonesia were Malaysia ($X), Angola ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 49% share of total exports. Oman, Saudi Arabia, Congo, Gambia and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Among the main countries of destination, Congo, with a CAGR of +159.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average rice export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -21.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined significantly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mali (+21.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Rice Imports
Imports into Indonesia
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of rice increased by 19% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 593%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rice imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 469% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of rice imports to Indonesia, with a combined 90% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of -0.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, India ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the largest rice suppliers to Indonesia, together accounting for 91% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of -2.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Import Prices by Country
The average rice import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -13.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 35%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
