Saccharin Market Size in Indonesia

After five years of growth, the Indonesian saccharin market decreased by -9.4% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. Saccharin consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of saccharin and its salts, when their volume increased by 93% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 113% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, saccharin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 154% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India (X tons) was the main destination for saccharin exports from Indonesia, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, saccharin exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to India totaled -14.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-15.9% per year) and Vietnam (+4.3% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) remains the key foreign market for saccharin and its salts exports from Indonesia, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to India stood at -13.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-10.6% per year) and Vietnam (-10.3% per year).

The average saccharin export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 3.8% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, saccharin export price increased by +9.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 36%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+33.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2021, the amount of saccharin and its salts imported into Indonesia rose modestly to X tons, growing by 2.8% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, saccharin imports fell slightly to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +6.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 29%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) was the main supplier of saccharin to Indonesia, with a 96% share of total imports. Moreover, saccharin imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of saccharin and its salts to Indonesia, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports.

The average saccharin import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -4.7% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, saccharin import price decreased by -25.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for China totaled $X per ton.
