Slate Market Size in Indonesia

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Indonesian slate market, when its value decreased by -15% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption recorded significant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, slate exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,454%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) was the main destination for slate exports from Indonesia, accounting for a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, slate exports to Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tons), fourfold. Canada (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Taiwan (Chinese) totaled +22.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+22.9% per year) and Canada (+115.9% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for slate exported from Indonesia were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Japan ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 72% share of total exports. Germany, China, Malaysia and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Canada, with a CAGR of +56.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average slate export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 17%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Indonesia

Slate imports into Indonesia contracted significantly to X tons in 2021, which is down by -63.9% on the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a precipitous decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 60%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, slate imports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a precipitous shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest slate supplier to Indonesia, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, slate imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), eightfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy stood at +15.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-23.8% per year) and China (-37.6% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of slate to Indonesia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy totaled +16.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-3.7% per year) and China (-21.1% per year).

In 2021, the average slate import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+28.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
