Overall, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +63.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, technical textiles exports stood at $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

China (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of technical textiles exports from Indonesia, together accounting for 78% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +71.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for technical textiles exported from Indonesia were Japan ($X), China ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 70% of total exports.

China, with a CAGR of +42.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+38.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2021, the amount of textile products and articles for technical uses imported into Indonesia skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 19% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 101%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, technical textiles imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 28%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of technical textiles to Indonesia, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, technical textiles imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), fivefold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-3.5% per year) and South Korea (-9.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of textile products and articles for technical uses to Indonesia, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-0.1% per year) and South Korea (-17.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average technical textiles import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
