Tissue Paper Market Size in Indonesia
In 2022, the Indonesian tissue paper market increased by 203% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption posted a moderate expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Tissue Paper Production in Indonesia
In value terms, tissue paper production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +3.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 39% against the previous year. Tissue paper production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Indonesia
In 2022, overseas shipments of toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper decreased by -19.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tissue paper exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Korea (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the main destinations of tissue paper exports from Indonesia, with a combined 34% share of total exports. Malaysia, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, Greece, China, New Zealand, South Africa and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Greece (with a CAGR of +60.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for tissue paper exported from Indonesia were the United States ($X), South Korea ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 36% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese), Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Greece, New Zealand, Vietnam, China, South Africa and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
Among the main countries of destination, Greece, with a CAGR of +62.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average tissue paper export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper, when their volume decreased by -6% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 173% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, tissue paper imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) constituted the largest tissue paper supplier to Indonesia, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, tissue paper imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, New Zealand (X tons), tenfold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Vietnam totaled +32.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (+48.3% per year) and Japan (+2.9% per year).
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest supplier of toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper to Indonesia, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 4% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 2.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Vietnam totaled +31.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-7.9% per year) and China (+7.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average tissue paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
