Sportswear Market Size in Indonesia
After two years of decline, the Indonesian sportswear market increased by 5.3% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Sportswear consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Sportswear Production in Indonesia
In value terms, sportswear production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 7%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Indonesia
For the seventh year in a row, Indonesia recorded decline in shipments abroad of track suits, ski suits and swimwear, which decreased by -1.2% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sportswear exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X units) was the main destination for sportswear exports from Indonesia, accounting for a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, sportswear exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X units), more than tenfold. Germany (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States totaled -12.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-12.3% per year) and Germany (-19.3% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for track suits, ski suits and swimwear exports from Indonesia, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States stood at +2.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+3.4% per year) and Germany (-2.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sportswear export price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 30% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 115%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+23.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sportswear Imports
Imports into Indonesia
In 2021, imports of track suits, ski suits and swimwear into Indonesia plummeted to X units, shrinking by -31.2% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 219%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sportswear imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 128%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Cambodia (X units) were the main suppliers of sportswear imports to Indonesia, with a combined 79% share of total imports. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +62.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sportswear suppliers to Indonesia were China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Cambodia ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports.
Cambodia, with a CAGR of +58.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sportswear import price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the price for Sri Lanka ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
