Wine Market Size in Indonesia
After two years of decline, the Indonesian wine market increased by 69% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption showed a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of wine were finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 307%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wine exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a sharp curtailment. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Singapore (X litres) was the main destination for wine exports from Indonesia, accounting for a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, wine exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Timor-Leste (X litres), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (X litres), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore totaled -11.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Timor-Leste (-8.6% per year) and Malaysia (-24.0% per year).
In value terms, Singapore ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for wine exports from Indonesia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Timor-Leste ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Singapore amounted to -27.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Timor-Leste (-10.6% per year) and Malaysia (-34.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average wine export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, rising by 57% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 223%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Timor-Leste ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Timor-Leste (-2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Wine Imports
Imports into Indonesia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of wine was finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 1,446%. Imports peaked at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 815% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Australia (X litres), Italy (X litres) and Chile (X litres) were the main suppliers of wine imports to Indonesia, with a combined 43% share of total imports. France, the United States, Spain, Argentina, Singapore and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +151.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Australia ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the largest wine suppliers to Indonesia, together accounting for 30% of total imports. Chile, the United States, Spain, Argentina, Singapore and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Argentina, with a CAGR of +111.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wine import price amounted to $X per litre, declining by -9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per litre), while the price for Chile ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
