In value terms, silk fabric exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 301%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates (X square meters) was the main destination for silk fabric exports from Indonesia, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, silk fabric exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X square meters), more than tenfold. The Netherlands (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates stood at -23.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+0.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+34.9% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste exports from Indonesia, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United Arab Emirates totaled -22.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+1.4% per year) and Myanmar (-12.5% per year).

In 2021, the average silk fabric export price amounted to $X per square meter, reducing by -52.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw modest growth. In 2021, the amount of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste imported into Indonesia declined to X square meters, waning by -11.5% on 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 332% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, silk fabric imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 295%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, South Korea (X square meters) constituted the largest silk fabric supplier to Indonesia, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, silk fabric imports from South Korea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X square meters), twofold. Hong Kong SAR (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from South Korea amounted to +24.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-15.6% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-31.6% per year).

In value terms, South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) were the largest silk fabric suppliers to Indonesia, with a combined 96% share of total imports.

South Korea, with a CAGR of +23.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

The average silk fabric import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, growing by 2.1% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, silk fabric import price increased by +93.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
