Yams Market Size in Indonesia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Indonesian yams market, when its value decreased by -34.1% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, posted buoyant growth. Yams consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Yams Production in Indonesia

Malaysia (X tons) was the main destination for yams exports from Indonesia, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, yams exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Brunei Darussalam (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia amounted to -16.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brunei Darussalam (-16.0% per year) and Singapore (-12.8% per year).

In value terms, Brunei Darussalam ($X) remains the key foreign market for yams exports from Indonesia, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Brunei Darussalam stood at -19.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-23.1% per year) and Singapore (-11.3% per year).

The average yams export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -15.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep setback. Yams imports into Indonesia reduced remarkably to X tons in 2022, waning by -65.2% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 792%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, yams imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 972%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of yams to Indonesia, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, yams imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), ninefold.
