Almond Market Size in Iran

In 2021, the Iranian almond market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, the total consumption indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -39.9% against 2018 indices. Almond production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of almonds in Iran was estimated at X tons per ha, picking up by 1.7% compared with 2020 figures. In general, the yield saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average almond yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of almonds were harvested in Iran; picking up by 2.1% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 80%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to almond production reached the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Iran

In 2021, exports of almonds from Iran contracted notably to X tons, shrinking by -70.3% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a precipitous descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 264%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, almond exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 289%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kuwait (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main destinations of almond exports from Iran, together accounting for 67% of total exports. These countries were followed by Canada, Qatar, India and Bahrain, which together accounted for a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Canada (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Kuwait ($X), Turkey ($X) and Canada ($X) were the largest markets for almond exported from Iran worldwide, with a combined 59% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Canada, with a CAGR of +11.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average almond export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 69% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of almonds imported into Iran skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 22% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +49.3% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, almond imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -39.2% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main supplier of almond to Iran, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
