For the third consecutive year, the Iranian calcium carbonate market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 9.8% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. Calcium carbonate consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, calcium carbonate exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 31%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Azerbaijan (X tons) was the main destination for calcium carbonate exports from Iran, accounting for a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, calcium carbonate exports to Azerbaijan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Uzbekistan (X tons), with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Azerbaijan amounted to +2.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (+41.6% per year) and Uzbekistan (+31.5% per year).

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) remains the key foreign market for calcium carbonate exports from Iran, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Azerbaijan stood at +8.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+55.4% per year) and Armenia (+31.4% per year).

In 2021, the average calcium carbonate export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, supplies from abroad of calcium carbonate increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, calcium carbonate imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw prominent growth. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of calcium carbonate to Iran, accounting for a 44% share of total imports.
