The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbon dioxide exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 62%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Afghanistan (X tons) was the main destination for carbon dioxide exports from Iran, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, carbon dioxide exports to Afghanistan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Azerbaijan (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Afghanistan amounted to -11.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (-40.5% per year) and Iraq (-22.5% per year).
In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) remains the key foreign market for carbon dioxide exports from Iran, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Afghanistan totaled -7.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (-41.3% per year) and Iraq (-26.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average carbon dioxide export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, carbon dioxide export price decreased by -0.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Afghanistan (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Iran
In 2022, the amount of carbon dioxide imported into Iran expanded slightly to X tons, rising by 2.9% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 1,668% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbon dioxide imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 2,109% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest carbon dioxide supplier to Iran, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, carbon dioxide imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +10.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+9.8% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+16.5% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carbon dioxide to Iran, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany totaled +33.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-20.6% per year) and China (+10.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average carbon dioxide import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 77%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+21.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
