Chestnut Market Size in Iran

In 2021, the Iranian chestnut market increased by 122% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, shipments abroad of chestnuts was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 331% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chestnut exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 225% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kuwait (X tons) was the main destination for chestnut exports from Iran, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, chestnut exports to Kuwait exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lebanon (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kuwait totaled -11.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lebanon (-45.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Lebanon ($X), Kuwait ($X) and Qatar ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for chestnut exported from Iran worldwide, with a combined 100% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, which accounted for a further 0.1%.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of 0.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2021, the average chestnut export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lebanon (+16.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of chestnuts imported into Iran dropped to X tons, with a decrease of -13.8% compared with the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 404% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chestnut imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 450% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
