In 2022, shipments abroad of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa decreased by -1.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 699% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chocolate exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 701% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Azerbaijan (X tons) was the main destination for chocolate exports from Iran, accounting for a 93% share of total exports. It was followed by Georgia (X tons), with a 1.9% share of total exports. Armenia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Azerbaijan stood at +149.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Georgia (-24.3% per year) and Armenia (-2.7% per year).
In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) remains the key foreign market for chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa exports from Iran, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Armenia ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Georgia, with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Azerbaijan totaled +92.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Armenia (-7.5% per year) and Georgia (-36.0% per year).

The average chocolate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -11.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tajikistan (+19.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa, when their volume increased by 2.1% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 148%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chocolate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 208%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the main supplier of chocolate to Iran, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
