Cocoa Bean Market Size in Iran

The Iranian cocoa bean market fell to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In 2022, shipments abroad of cocoa beans decreased by -39.6% to X kg for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 50%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cocoa bean exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant decline. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Bahrain (X kg) and France (X kg) were the main destinations of cocoa bean exports from Iran.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of -4.8%).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for cocoa beans exports from Iran, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bahrain ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France stood at -12.0%.

In 2022, the average cocoa bean export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 70% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahrain amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+6.3%).

Imports into Iran

In 2022, cocoa bean imports into Iran dropped modestly to X tons, declining by -3.2% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 197%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cocoa bean imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 172%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cocoa bean to Iran, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, cocoa bean imports from Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ghana (X tons), twofold. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 21% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +35.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+13.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-2.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest cocoa bean suppliers to Iran were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 94% of total imports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +37.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cocoa bean import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 30%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while the price for Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
