The Iranian composite paperboard market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a significant decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Iraq (X tons) was the main destination for composite paperboard exports from Iran, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, composite paperboard exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Azerbaijan (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Iraq stood at -14.6%.

In value terms, Iraq ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) were the largest markets for composite paperboard exported from Iran worldwide.

Among the main countries of destination, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of -17.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.

The average composite paperboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 8.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 155%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq amounted to $X per ton.

In 2021, purchases abroad of composite paper and paperboard decreased by -1.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports faced a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 65%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 60%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of composite paperboard to Iran, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, composite paperboard imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), twofold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey stood at +7.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+34.5% per year) and South Korea (-22.6% per year).

The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey totaled +13.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-10.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-6.0% per year).

The average composite paperboard import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 46% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 62% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
