In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Iraq (X tons) was the main destination for cucumber and gherkin exports from Iran, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Qatar (X tons), with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Iraq amounted to -3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-20.6% per year) and Qatar (-11.3% per year).
In value terms, Iraq ($X), Russia ($X) and Qatar ($X) were the largest markets for cucumber and gherkin exported from Iran worldwide, together comprising 93% of total exports. Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 2.2%.
The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of -2.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
The average cucumber and gherkin export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 9.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Azerbaijan (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Iran
Cucumber and gherkin imports into Iran surged to X tons in 2022, jumping by 86% against the year before. In general, imports enjoyed a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 93%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 67%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main supplier of cucumber and gherkin to Iran, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman (X kg), with a 2.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates totaled +2.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Oman (+18.4% per year) and Brazil (+9.2% per year).
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cucumbers and gherkins to Iran, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 3.7% share of total imports.
