Market Size for Prepared Dishes And Meals in Iran

After four years of decline, the Iranian prepared dish and meal market increased by 32% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the third year in a row, Iran recorded growth in overseas shipments of prepared dishes and meals, which increased by 71% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 132%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, prepared dish and meal exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 259%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan (X tons) was the main destination for prepared dish and meal exports from Iran, accounting for a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, prepared dish and meal exports to Azerbaijan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Pakistan (X tons), threefold. Lebanon (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Azerbaijan totaled +44.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+48.1% per year) and Lebanon (+140.5% per year).

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X), Georgia ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for prepared dish and meal exported from Iran worldwide, with a combined 36% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Pakistan, Kuwait, Australia, Lebanon, Canada, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, the Netherlands and Oman, which together accounted for a further 45%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Lebanon, with a CAGR of +114.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average prepared dish and meal export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -18.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 94%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Georgia (+14.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Iran

In 2021, purchases abroad of prepared dishes and meals increased by 48% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 121% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared dish and meal imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest prepared dish and meal supplier to Iran, accounting for a 33% share of total imports. Moreover, prepared dish and meal imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to -6.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (-1.0% per year) and India (+34.8% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the largest prepared dish and meal suppliers to Iran, with a combined 42% share of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +59.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average prepared dish and meal import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -14.9% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+18.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
