Hazelnut Market Size in Iran

The Iranian hazelnut market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of hazelnuts in Iran reached X kg per ha, stabilizing at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The hazelnut yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. After three years of decline, overseas shipments of hazelnuts increased by 1,127% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep setback. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 739% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Qatar (X tons) was the main destination for hazelnut exports from Iran, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, hazelnut exports to Qatar exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Pakistan (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Estonia (X tons), with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Qatar stood at +106.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+66.5% per year) and Estonia (+599.5% per year).

In value terms, Qatar ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for hazelnut exports from Iran, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Estonia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Qatar totaled +83.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Estonia (+537.5% per year) and Pakistan (+54.1% per year).

In 2021, the average hazelnut export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -58.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 849% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Import Prices by Country

The average hazelnut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -32.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 77% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey amounted to $X per ton.
