Over the period under review, exports posted a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 250% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, oils from coal tar exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 268% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for oils from coal tar exports from Iran, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, oils from coal tar exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), sevenfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled +7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+5.0% per year) and India (-2.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar exports from Iran, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 9% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China amounted to +2.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+3.9% per year) and India (-9.0% per year).

In 2021, the average oils from coal tar export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Imports into Iran

For the fourth year in a row, Iran recorded decline in supplies from abroad of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar, which decreased by -52.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 247% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oils from coal tar imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 160% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), India (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of oils from coal tar imports to Iran, with a combined 92% share of total imports. South Korea and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.3%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of -2.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), India ($X) and China ($X) were the largest oils from coal tar suppliers to Iran, together comprising 71% of total imports. Germany and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Among the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +4.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2021, the average oils from coal tar import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild setback. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
