After seven years of decline, the Iranian cyclic hydrocarbons market increased by 5.2% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of other cyclic hydrocarbons decreased by -67% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a precipitous decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 169%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a sharp decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for cyclic hydrocarbons exports from Iran, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, cyclic hydrocarbons exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Afghanistan (X tons), fourfold.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for other cyclic hydrocarbons exports from Iran, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Afghanistan ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United Arab Emirates amounted to -34.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Afghanistan (-38.5% per year) and Iraq (-37.4% per year).

In 2021, the average cyclic hydrocarbons export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 13%. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 183%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 124% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cyclic hydrocarbons to Iran, with a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, cyclic hydrocarbons imports from Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bulgaria (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Taiwan (Chinese) stood at -3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (0.0% per year) and China (-5.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest cyclic hydrocarbons suppliers to Iran were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 51% of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +29.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average cyclic hydrocarbons import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 207% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
