The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 98%. Azerbaijan (X tons) was the main destination for paper and paperboard exports from Iran, accounting for a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, paper and paperboard exports to Azerbaijan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iraq (X tons), eightfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Azerbaijan amounted to +25.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (-15.8% per year) and Afghanistan (+21.5% per year).
In value terms, Iraq ($X) remains the key foreign market for paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports from Iran, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Iraq totaled +11.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (+34.8% per year) and Afghanistan (+27.3% per year).

The average paper and paperboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -14.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Iran
For the third consecutive year, Iran recorded decline in supplies from abroad of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated), which decreased by -36.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports faced a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 79%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of paper and paperboard imports to Iran, with a combined 73% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +5.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) to Iran, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates stood at +9.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-21.0% per year) and Germany (-14.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average paper and paperboard import price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard import price increased by +57.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
