Persimmon Market Size in Iran

The Iranian persimmon market contracted significantly to $X in 2021, which is down by -16.3% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 321% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Iraq (X tons) was the main destination for persimmon exports from Iran, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, persimmon exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Afghanistan (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Iraq amounted to +101.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+6.8% per year) and Afghanistan (+36.2% per year).

In value terms, Iraq ($X) remains the key foreign market for persimmon exports from Iran, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Afghanistan, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Iraq amounted to +93.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+67.7% per year) and Afghanistan (+36.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average persimmon export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+17.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fourth year in a row, Iran recorded growth in purchases abroad of persimmons, which increased by 32% to X tons in 2020. Overall, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
