Crude Oil Market Size in Iran
In 2022, the Iranian crude oil market increased by 138% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Iran
In 2022, approx. X tons of crude petroleum oil were exported from Iran; declining by -99.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, crude oil exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a precipitous decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the main destinations of crude oil exports from Iran, together accounting for 44% of total exports. France, Greece, Japan, Austria, the UK, China, South Africa, India, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 50%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of -11.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) remains the key foreign market for crude petroleum oil exports from Iran, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Taiwan (Chinese) totaled -8.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-24.0% per year) and South Korea (-40.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average crude oil export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 39% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a mild downturn. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Iran
In 2022, the amount of crude petroleum oil imported into Iran reduced to X tons, which is down by -8.3% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 83% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, crude oil imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main crude oil supplier to Iran, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to -11.3%.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of crude petroleum oil to Iran.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates amounted to -10.8%.
Import Prices by Country
The average crude oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 31% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for the United Arab Emirates.
