Potato Market Size in Iran

The Iranian potato market declined to $X in 2021, dropping by -8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a mild downturn. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Potato Production in Iran

In value terms, potato production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 763% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Iran, accounting for a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Azerbaijan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uzbekistan (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Azerbaijan amounted to +21.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+17.4% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.0% per year).

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) remains the key foreign market for potato exports from Iran, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Azerbaijan totaled +27.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+35.7% per year) and Qatar (+37.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average potato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 20%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Afghanistan (+26.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Iran

Potato imports into Iran reduced notably to X tons in 2021, dropping by -53.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,191% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, potato imports fell notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 1,340%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Qatar (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Oman (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato imports to Iran, with a combined 88% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +260.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Iran, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+98.5% per year) and the UK (-5.2% per year).

In 2021, the average potato import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -36.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 18%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
