Soft Drink Market Size in Iran

In 2021, the Iranian soft drink market decreased by less than 0.1% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Soft drink consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 208% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 412%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Kazakhstan (X litres), Azerbaijan (X litres) and Malaysia (X litres) were the main destinations of soft drink exports from Iran, together accounting for 34% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, the Netherlands, the UK, Australia, Romania, Canada, China and Lebanon, which together accounted for a further 53%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +136.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) were the largest markets for soft drink exported from Iran worldwide, with a combined 32% share of total exports. Romania, with a CAGR of +147.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average soft drink export price amounted to $X per litre, which is down by -6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 66%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of soft drinks increased by 36% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X litres) constituted the largest soft drink supplier to Iran, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, soft drink imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X litres), twofold. Thailand (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+47.6% per year) and Thailand (-9.7% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of soft drink to Iran, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+46.8% per year) and Thailand (-11.6% per year).
