Telephone Market Size in Iran

The Iranian telephone market was estimated at $X in 2022, increasing by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight curtailment. Telephone consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of telephones and videophones was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 15,586% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, telephone exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a precipitous decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 15,246%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sudan (X units) was the main destination for telephone exports from Iran, accounting for a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, telephone exports to Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Georgia (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Romania (X units), with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sudan stood at -20.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Georgia (+6.2% per year) and Romania (+7.2% per year).

In value terms, Sudan ($X) remains the key foreign market for telephones and videophones exports from Iran, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Georgia ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Sudan amounted to -11.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Georgia (+15.9% per year) and Turkey (+218.0% per year).

In 2022, the average telephone export price amounted to $X per unit, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 47% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of telephones and videophones increased by 141% to X units for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, faced a deep reduction. Imports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, China (X units) was the main telephone supplier to Iran, with a 91% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates (X units), with a 2.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +7.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-42.0% per year) and Malaysia (+2.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of telephones and videophones to Iran, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports.
