In 2021, approx. X tons of textile products and articles for technical uses were exported from Iran; falling by -9.7% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 2,503% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, technical textiles exports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant increase. Iraq (X tons) was the main destination for technical textiles exports from Iran, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, technical textiles exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Iraq totaled +23.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+161.7% per year) and Azerbaijan (+23.1% per year).

In value terms, Iraq ($X) remains the key foreign market for textile products and articles for technical uses exports from Iran, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Iraq stood at +21.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+129.3% per year) and Azerbaijan (+4.4% per year).

The average technical textiles export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Iran

In 2021, overseas purchases of textile products and articles for technical uses were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, technical textiles imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 57%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest technical textiles supplier to Iran, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, technical textiles imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+10.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-6.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of textile products and articles for technical uses to Iran, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+19.4% per year) and Germany (-8.7% per year).

In 2021, the average technical textiles import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 39%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
