The Iranian twine and cordage market expanded notably to $X in 2022, picking up by 8.1% against the previous year. In 2022, approx. X tons of twine, cordage, rope and cables were exported from Iran; with a decrease of -19% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, twine and cordage exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 73% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Turkey (X tons) was the main destination for twine and cordage exports from Iran, accounting for a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, twine and cordage exports to Turkey exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Georgia (X tons), twofold. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Turkey amounted to +35.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Georgia (+21.6% per year) and Azerbaijan (+40.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for twine and cordage exported from Iran were Turkey ($X), Georgia ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X), together comprising 73% of total exports. Armenia, Romania, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +56.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average twine and cordage export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of twine, cordage, rope and cables were imported into Iran; falling by -6.1% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 551% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, twine and cordage imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 692%.
