Whisky Market Size in Iran

The Iranian whisky market dropped to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, whisky production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Iran

Whisky exports from Iran contracted slightly to X litres in 2022, reducing by -4.5% against the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 518% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, whisky exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 477%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres) and Tanzania (X litres) were the main destinations of whisky exports from Iran, together accounting for 58% of total exports. These countries were followed by El Salvador, North Macedonia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Slovenia, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for New Zealand (with a CAGR of +76.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for whisky exported from Iran were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovenia ($X), together accounting for 46% of total exports. Tanzania, North Macedonia, Sri Lanka, El Salvador and New Zealand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Among the main countries of destination, New Zealand, with a CAGR of +75.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average whisky export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, dropping by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 54%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovenia ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (+340.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Iran

In 2022, imports of whisky into Iran contracted sharply to X litres, dropping by -45.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 425%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, whisky imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 296% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Denmark (X litres) constituted the largest whisky supplier to Iran, with a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, whisky imports from Denmark exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X litres), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Denmark totaled -1.9%.

In value terms, Denmark ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whisky to Iran, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Denmark stood at +3.6%.

Import Prices by Country

The average whisky import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, whisky import price increased by +9.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 138%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for Denmark amounted to $X per litre.
