Kuwait (X square meters) was the main destination for silk fabric exports from Iran, accounting for a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, silk fabric exports to Kuwait exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X square meters), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Oman (X square meters), with a 2.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kuwait totaled +599.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-0.1% per year) and Oman (+17.2% per year).
In value terms, Kuwait ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste exports from Iran, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 0.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Kuwait amounted to +15.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-2.5% per year) and Singapore (0.0% per year).

Imports into Iran
In 2021, overseas purchases of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste decreased by -1.8% to X square meters, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a precipitous curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 496% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, silk fabric imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a sharp reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 835%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of silk fabric to Iran, accounting for a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, silk fabric imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Azerbaijan (X square meters), sevenfold. Turkey (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to -31.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Azerbaijan (-25.3% per year) and Turkey (-19.0% per year).
In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste to Iran, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Azerbaijan totaled -18.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-29.8% per year) and Turkey (+3.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average silk fabric import price amounted to $X per square meter, with an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, silk fabric import price increased by +48.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 109%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per square meter), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+27.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
