Barley Market Size in Iraq

The Iraqi barley market soared to $X in 2022, jumping by 133% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a measured expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Barley Production in Iraq

In value terms, barley production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 700% against the previous year. Barley production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of barley in Iraq totaled X tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 764%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average barley yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The barley harvested area in Iraq soared to X ha in 2022, with an increase of 275% on 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area showed measured growth. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to barley production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of barley, when their volume decreased by -27.9% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 110%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, barley imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 119%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Turkey (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) were the main suppliers of barley imports to Iraq, with a combined 89% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +248.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Iraq, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey amounted to +23.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+255.8% per year) and Uruguay (0.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average barley import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 9.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
