Canned Meat Market Size in Iraq

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in the Iraqi canned meat market, when its value increased by 3.8% to $X. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. In 2021, shipments abroad of canned meat decreased by -66.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, exports saw a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 316%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, canned meat exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 435%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons) was the main destination for canned meat exports from Iraq, accounting for a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with a 2.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Turkey amounted to -2.9%.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned meat exports from Iraq, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 1.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Turkey totaled +5.8%.

In 2021, the average canned meat export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+19.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Iraq

In 2021, overseas purchases of canned meat decreased by -18.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 55%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, canned meat imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest canned meat supplier to Iraq, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, canned meat imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey stood at +16.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+32.3% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-1.8% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) constituted the largest canned meat suppliers to Iraq, together comprising 61% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +27.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average canned meat import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 2%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
