Frozen Whole Fish Market Size in Iraq
In 2021, the Iraqi frozen whole fish market decreased by -53.9% to $X, falling for the fifth consecutive year after five years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a remarkable increase. Frozen whole fish consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2020, frozen whole fish exports from Iraq totaled X kg, with an increase of 8.2% compared with 2019. In general, exports, however, showed a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 197%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, frozen whole fish exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a sharp downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 111%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Oman (X kg) was the main destination for frozen whole fish exports from Iraq, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, frozen whole fish exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X kg), threefold.
From 2012 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to Oman was relatively modest.
In value terms, Oman ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for frozen whole fish exported from Iraq worldwide.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Oman, with a CAGR of 0.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The average frozen whole fish export price stood at $X per ton in 2020, with an increase of 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (-6.4%).

Imports into Iraq
In 2021, purchases abroad of frozen whole fish decreased by -62.7% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 444%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, frozen whole fish imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 476%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Iran (X tons) constituted the largest frozen whole fish supplier to Iraq, accounting for a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen whole fish imports from Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), more than tenfold. Myanmar (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Iran stood at +52.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+14.7% per year) and Myanmar (-26.7% per year).
In value terms, Iran ($X) constituted the largest supplier of frozen whole fish to Iraq, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 3.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 1.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Iran stood at +38.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+12.6% per year) and Turkey (+3.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average frozen whole fish import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (-1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
