For the third year in a row, the Irish dried or smoked fish market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -50.9% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption recorded a pronounced setback. Dried or smoked fish consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dried or smoked fish production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a slight descent. Exports by Country
The UK (X tons) was the main destination for dried or smoked fish exports from Ireland, with a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, dried or smoked fish exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK totaled +3.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+19.1% per year) and Germany (-15.3% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for dried or smoked fish exported from Ireland were France ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 72% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Lithuania, Portugal and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 16%.
Among the main countries of destination, South Korea, with a CAGR of +554.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average dried or smoked fish export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, dried or smoked fish export price increased by +39.0% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 30%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Portugal (+41.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of dried or smoked fish decreased by -47.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, imports showed a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 42%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dried or smoked fish imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -33.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 38%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of dried or smoked fish imports to Ireland, with a combined 88% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, which together accounted for a further 8.7%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +29.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dried or smoked fish to Ireland, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 2.2% share.

Based on 2021 figures, dried or smoked fish import price increased by +38.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 77%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
