Wine Market Size in Ireland
The Irish wine market reduced dramatically to $X in 2021, which is down by -16.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Exports from Ireland
In 2021, overseas shipments of wine decreased by -35.7% to X litres, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 154% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wine exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X litres) was the main destination for wine exports from Ireland, with a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, wine exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X litres), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X litres), with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands stood at +39.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+50.4% per year) and the UK (+2.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for wine exported from Ireland were the UK ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 66% of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, which accounted for a further 6.1%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +52.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average wine export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, increasing by 83% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to France ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Wine Imports
Imports into Ireland
In 2021, the amount of wine imported into Ireland declined sharply to X litres, shrinking by -26% against 2020 figures. Overall, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 43%. Imports peaked at X litres in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, wine imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
France (X litres), Spain (X litres) and Chile (X litres) were the main suppliers of wine imports to Ireland, with a combined 44% share of total imports. Australia, Italy, the UK, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Germany and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +61.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Chile ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest wine suppliers to Ireland, together accounting for 47% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and South Africa, which together accounted for a further 42%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +49.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average wine import price stood at $X per litre in 2021, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per litre), while the price for Germany ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
