The United States (X tons) was the main destination for salt exports from Israel, with a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, salt exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Portugal (X tons), with a 9.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States stood at +18.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-5.3% per year) and Portugal (-4.4% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for salt and pure sodium chloride exports from Israel, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.4% share.

Imports into Israel
In 2022, supplies from abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by -7.3% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 277% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, salt imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 231% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of salt to Israel, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, salt imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X tons), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands stood at +43.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+27.4% per year) and Turkey (+30.1% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of salt and pure sodium chloride to Israel, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with an 11% share.
