The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 28%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Romania (X units) was the main destination for exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers from Italy, with a 24% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X units), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Romania totaled +29.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+19.8% per year) and France (+5.1% per year).

Spain, Greece, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Cyprus, Albania, Poland, Canada and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Cyprus, with a CAGR of +39.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +120.2% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +84.8% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

France (X units), Germany (X units) and the Czech Republic (X units) were the main suppliers of imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Italy, together accounting for 46% of total imports. Greece, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, the UK, Egypt, Switzerland and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 48%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +107.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Greece, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Switzerland, Egypt, Slovenia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +125.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per unit), while the price for Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
