Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Malta ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malta (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, overseas purchases of bananas and plantains decreased by -1.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Colombia (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) were the main suppliers of banana and plantain imports to Italy, with a combined 81% share of total imports. The Netherlands, France, Guatemala, Cote d'Ivoire and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
