These countries were followed by Angola, the Netherlands, Brazil, the United States, Switzerland, Senegal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cameroon, Ghana and Russia, which together accounted for a further 44%.

In 2021, overseas purchases of calcium carbonate were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 45%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, calcium carbonate imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of calcium carbonate imports to Italy, together comprising 69% of total imports. The UK, Spain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +60.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
