The Italian chalk market dropped remarkably to $X in 2021, waning by -19.5% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. In value terms, chalk exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate pronounced growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for chalk exports from Italy, with a 35% share of total exports. Moreover, chalk exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Greece (X tons), threefold. Algeria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia stood at +2.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Greece (+6.5% per year) and Algeria (-6.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for chalk exported from Italy were Algeria ($X), Russia ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 63% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Poland, Brazil, Greece, Slovenia, Morocco, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Jordan and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +43.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average chalk export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed pronounced growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+21.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of chalks increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chalk imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 102% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest chalk supplier to Italy, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, chalk imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France stood at +45.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+6.1% per year) and Spain (+24.3% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chalk to Italy, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from France totaled +44.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+8.6% per year) and Spain (+17.2% per year).
