Champagne Market Size in Italy
The Italian champagne market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, the total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Italy
In 2021, the amount of champagne exported from Italy surged to X tons, growing by 17% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -21.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, champagne exports reached $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 66%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Japan (X tons) was the main destination for champagne exports from Italy, accounting for a 18% share of total exports. Moreover, champagne exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Switzerland (X tons), twofold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Japan stood at -1.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+6.1% per year) and China (+64.3% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest markets for champagne exported from Italy worldwide, together accounting for 45% of total exports. France, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, the UK, Canada, the United States, China, Colombia and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +112.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average champagne export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -14% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 24%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of champagne, when their volume increased by 41% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, champagne imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest champagne supplier to Italy, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, champagne imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (X tons), with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France stood at -1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+30.8% per year) and Spain (+39.5% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of champagne to Italy, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 3.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from France stood at +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+34.6% per year) and Spain (+35.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average champagne import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, champagne import price increased by +91.8% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 55% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from France ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
