In 2022, supplies from abroad of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa decreased by -10.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, chocolate imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of chocolate imports to Italy, with a combined 86% share of total imports. France, Romania, Austria, Poland and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.
