Clove Market Size in Italy

For the third year in a row, the Italian clove market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 36% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a slight expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Clove exports from Italy reached X tons in 2022, growing by 2.1% compared with 2021. In general, exports saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, clove exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +96.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 47%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Spain (X tons), Greece (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of clove exports from Italy, with a combined 62% share of total exports. Germany, Canada, Denmark, France, Albania and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +116.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for clove exported from Italy were Spain ($X), the UK ($X) and Greece ($X), with a combined 59% share of total exports. Germany, France, Denmark, Switzerland, Canada and Albania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Among the main countries of destination, Denmark, with a CAGR of +102.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average clove export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 7.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, clove imports into Italy skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 15% compared with the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 49%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, clove imports soared to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Madagascar (X tons), France (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of clove imports to Italy, with a combined 64% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +71.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest clove suppliers to Italy were Madagascar ($X), France ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together comprising 62% of total imports. The Netherlands, Germany, Tanzania and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

In 2022, the average clove import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
