In 2022, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal increased by 0.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 3.1%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh beef carcase imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Poland (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh beef carcase imports to Italy, together accounting for 61% of total imports.
