Ghee Market Size in Italy
In 2022, the Italian ghee market increased by 34% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +71.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, approx. X tons of ghee were exported from Italy; falling by -42.1% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 225% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ghee exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 219%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for ghee exports from Italy, with a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, ghee exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belgium stood at +94.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+49.5% per year) and Germany (-10.6% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for ghee exports from Italy, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Belgium totaled +100.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-2.9% per year) and China (+61.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average ghee export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee export price increased by +15.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy
In 2022, approx. X tons of ghee were imported into Italy; growing by 5.8% on the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, ghee imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of ghee imports to Italy, together comprising 64% of total imports. Belgium, Germany, France and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +49.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest ghee suppliers to Italy were the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports. Belgium, Germany, France and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +49.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average ghee import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 36% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee import price increased by +69.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 68%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
