Graphite Market Size in Italy

The Italian graphite market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. Graphite consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of graphite (natural) decreased by -31.4% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 166% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for graphite exports from Italy, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, graphite exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), twofold. Romania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at +20.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+13.8% per year) and Romania (+20.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for graphite exported from Italy were the Czech Republic ($X), Germany ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for 77% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Romania, with a CAGR of +13.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average graphite export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 38% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+15.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, overseas purchases of graphite (natural) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a slight setback. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Madagascar (X tons), Germany (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of graphite imports to Italy, with a combined 67% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +58.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to Italy, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Madagascar (+54.5% per year) and China (-11.4% per year).

The average graphite import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
