In value terms, hydrogen exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Slovenia (X cubic meters), Switzerland (X cubic meters) and Romania (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of hydrogen exports from Italy, with a combined 77% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Slovenia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for hydrogen exports from Italy, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Switzerland ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Malta, with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovenia amounted to +30.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+14.3% per year) and Malta (-9.4% per year).

The average hydrogen export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, shrinking by -6.2% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hydrogen export price decreased by -12.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 35% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malta ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of hydrogen, when their volume decreased by -13.4% to X cubic meters. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 14%. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hydrogen imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of hydrogen to Italy, with a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, hydrogen imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovenia (X cubic meters), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X cubic meters), with a 2.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from France amounted to -7.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovenia (+33.4% per year) and Germany (-7.4% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hydrogen to Italy, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovenia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from France stood at -6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovenia (+30.0% per year) and Germany (-12.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average hydrogen import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 31%. The import price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were France ($X per cubic meter) and Germany ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Slovenia ($X per cubic meter) and the Netherlands ($X per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
