The Italian hydrogen market fell to $X in 2022, declining by -5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a deep downturn. Overall, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Slovenia (X cubic meters), Switzerland (X cubic meters) and Romania (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of hydrogen exports from Italy, with a combined 77% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 14%. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hydrogen imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, France (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of hydrogen to Italy, with a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, hydrogen imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovenia (X cubic meters), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X cubic meters), with a 2.6% share.
